An extremely rare mid 19th century American 18 carat gold combination propelling Pen & Pencil of a patented design.
The plain engine turned body has a vacant cartouche and is also engraved with the makers name - W.M.WILMARTH 18. There are raised foliate scroll chased collars to either end which facilitate the extension of the inner tubes which house the Pen & Pencil. The collars are then half-turned and retracted to expose the writing instruments. The process is repeated to close the instrument. The pen has a fine original gold nib. The inner barrel stamped: LOWNDS PATENT Oct.3.1854.
