Silver Scales

Here at Steppes Hill Farm Antiques we have a range of high quality antique silver measuring equipment for sale – predominantly weighing scales of various kinds, but also miscellaneous items such as tape measures and barometers. The first weighing scales that did not rely on counter weights came about in the Industrial Revolution, with James Salter inventing the first spring scales in around 1770. These scales work by measuring the pressure exerted on the spring which is converted into a weight, and this is the technology which drives many of our pieces from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
