Mystery Victorian Cased Silver Writing / Artists Pen & Pencil Set

Highly unusual Victorian cased silver Writing or Artists Pen and Pencil Set comprised of a mechanical twist opening propelling pencil with shaped reeded handle, the tapering barrel with bulbous compartment with pull-off cover opening to reveal a central storage compartment for leads / nibs etc. The dip pen with plain cylindrical barrel and felt or horsehair mop terminal. The barrel pulling apart and containing a slotted eraser with steel blade.

Complete with original silk and velvet lined Morocco red leather case.

Both pieces stamped: S Mordan & Co, and with registered design numbers 173800 and 173802. c1891

Each piece approximately 155 mm long

The inspiration for the design and the exact purpose of the component parts of this set remain unresolved at the present time.
