Unusual George III Silver Plain Escutcheon Wine Label Mountain

Unmarked c1760
Photo 1 of 5

An early George III silver Wine Label of unusual plain escutcheon form, pierced with large letters for Mountain in a curved manner to follow the shape of the label.

Unmarked c1790. Possibly by Thomas Hyde, London, c1784-94.

This design peculiar to the Hydes and dating c1784 – 94 is surprisingly 'crude' and out of period. See wine Labels 1730 - 2003 by John Salter, figs 534 and 537 and text pages 153 and 154.

Provenance: The Andrew Gilmour Collection, sold by Bonhams 2/10/13. Lot 213 (part).
