Victorian Novelty 10 carat Gold Plumb Bob / Spining Top Propelling Pencil

A very rare Victorian novelty 10 carat gold six-drawer telescopic Propelling Pencil made in the form of a Plumb Bob or Spinning Top, each section graduated to fit one inside the other when opened or closed. the circular body with attached suspension ring and reeded decoration. One section stamped with the diamond registration mark for 12th September 1873. The top stamped with the number 2148.

By Sampson Mordan & Co, London, 1873. Mordan Arrow mark for 10 carat gold.

The design application for the Plumb Bob Pencil was made by Walter Thornhill of 144 New Bond Street in 1873.

This design registration mark appears on Pencils carrying either the Thornhill or Sampson Mordan name on top of the cap, each pencil also carries a serial number. Although this was a popular design made in three different sizes in silver it appears more frequently by Sampson Mordan than by Walter Thornhill. It is very rare in gold.
