An unusual Victorian novelty silver chatelaine with a combination needle case and thimble holder modelled in the form of a gavel, the head of the gavel with a hinged side-opening cover used to hold a thimble, the end of the handle with a screw thread cap designed as a needle holder, ensuite with a belt clip and two suspensory chains, each with a fastening clip terminal, the back of the belt clip incised with British Registered Design Lozenge for November 22nd 1869 and the retailer's mark of Thornhill, 144 Bond St., with crown above.
