An extremely rare Victorian figural novelty silver telescopic Propelling Pencil made in the form of the comical literary character John Bull (the personification of an Englishman), depicting the stout man wearing a tailcoat, breeches and boots. Pulling on his top hat extends the pencil.
Unmarked, but probably made by Sampson Mordan & Co. The base of the figure has an applied diamond registration mark dated 16th March 1880.

This Pencil has also been attributed to the Dickens character Mr Pickwick, but I believe it depicts John Bull.
