Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook, (1 October 1814 – 30 October 1906), known as Gathorne Hardy until 1878, was a prominent British Conservative politician, a moderate, middle-of-the road Anglican. He held cabinet office in every Conservative government between 1858 and 1892 and notably served as Home Secretary from 1867 to 1868 and as Secretary of State for War from 1874 to 1878. The Earldom was created in 1892 for Gathorne-Hardy. He had already been created Viscount Cranbrook, of Hemsted in the County of Kent, in 1878 and was made Baron Medway, of Hemsted in the County of Kent, at the same time he was given the earldom.
