NATHANIEL MILLS, Birmingham 1834
Photo 1 of 11
An extremely fine quality large and heavy silver gilt Vinaigrette of rectangular form with engine turned base and sides, a vacant cartouche to the base and raised foliate borders, the lid chased and engraved with a high relief view of Abbotsford House (the home of Sir Walter Scott), from across the river Tweed, the garden framed by trees and flowers with a small building in the right foreground. The silver gilt grille pierced with scrolling leaf fronds and five flower heads.
This is a rarer view of Abbotsford than the more commonly seen view from the front of the house.

Literature
Built for Sir Walter Scott by local builder John Smith. Open to the public since 1833 the year after Sir Walter Scott died.
Named 'Abbotsford' because it was built at a fold in the River Tweed where the Monks crossed to Melrose Abbey.
